How do I make notes so that they are anchored to cells...

...instead of to the page?
So if a cell is moved the note moves along with it keeping the same dimensions and line structure and length as before?

Right click on the cell, click on Insert Comment, put in your comment.
Click off of it when you're done.

I know that but when I sort the data the comments are anchored to the page not the cell.

Strange, worked fine for me, I made a list like this (the comment indicators don't show in this sample, but they all have comments, equal to the number in the cell)

I then sorted this column and all the comments still were with the appropriate cell.

Can you explain exactly what you are doing?

I'm doing exactly that.
I think its the version I'm using.
Its and open office spreadsheet saved as an excel 2000 document so that's probably it.
Everything usually works the same as in excel but I guess this is an exception. :confused:
I'l figure something out.
