How do you convert a date to ASCI??

I am trying to change the value of the x axis of a chart based on user input. However it seems like I need to convert the Min and Max dates to ASCI in order for Minimumscale and Maximumscale to pick them up. Any ideas on how I can pass the dates into chart? Should I convert to ASCI or something else?
