I am doing a statistic project. the data are all from 1 to 5, stands for strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, strongly disagree,

I want to compute variables to AGREE VS NOT AGREE, that's put 1 and 2 into"1",and let 3,4,5 to be "2"

it can be figured out in spss, but so many numbers, I can do it column by column, but it will take a long time, I just want to know is there a way to compute variables in excel ,and then directly input to spss.

many thanks :):)

How is the data laid out? Do you have a column for each of the possible responses (1 to 5), or is there just one column with the values 1 to 5?

You'll need to give us some more information.

What do you mean by 'compute'?

It would be a pretty straightforward formula to return 1 for 1,2 and 2 for 3,4,5.

You also say it could be figured out in SPSS, if it can then why does it need to be done in Excel?

Doesn't SPSS have any sort of 'bucket' type functionality where you could assign values to certain categories.
