How to count the individual cell entries

Wow, I'm so glad I found this site. I'm hoping the Excel Masters can answer this one:

I have columns of text cells, none are empty. Each cell has a combination of single letters in it, for example one cell is "gh", the one below it is "ghikl" and the one below it is "gfil". How do I count the total individual letters in these cells? The result here would be 11.

(If anyone is familiar with the futures trading concept of Market Profile, what I'm talking about is individual TPOs).

Thanks!

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.
This array formula does the job

=SUM(LEN(A1:A3))

To enter an Array formula, you need to press Control Shift Enter at the same time, not just Enter like with regular formulas.
