Hello,

I'm trying to figure out if there is any function in excel (2007) which helps
decoding unicode to ascii?

I have one column in my sheet which contains word/sentences in Spanish and I want to create a new column which will be contained with the unicode value of each word/sentences.

For Example,

País => " País "

How do I decode (unicode to ascii) the word 'País' in excel?

Thank's for helping...

Welcome to MrExcel.

Why do you need to do that? The í in País is ASCII character 237.

Hi,
Thank's for replying..

My last message was displayed wrong unfortunately..

That's what i wanted to be displayed:
País => & # 80;& # 97;& # 237;& # 115;

However, my general goal is to create .properties files.

I thought of using excel to create .csv files and then replace all the ',' with '=' and then saving the file with .properties extension.

My problem was with foreign languages (like Spanish Russian)
I was getting '?' then.

I find the best way to put those languages in my .properties files
in its unicode values... fixing the '??' problem.

The question is how can i do it in excel? meaning, decoding words/sentences unicode to ascii. (like my example above)

Hope I was more clear now..

Hi

What you want is not possible. There are more than 256 letters used with Latin Script and so they don't fit in a byte.

That's why Unicode was created, to have just one set of characters that you can use everywhere.

What is done is you use the ASCII code for the first 128 characters and then, depending on the language, you use a set of the upper 128 characters that include the characters used in that language.

For ex., I guess the most used are the code page 850 in Windows that has a set of 256 characters that cover most Western Europe countries and code page 852 that has the characters for most Central Europe countries, but there are more.

So, maybe if you explain what you want we can try to figure out a solution?

The question is also why not use Unicode? It was created exactly to get rid of this problem of multiple pages and to unify the character sets.

Office Version
  1. 365
Platform
  1. Windows
Something like

Code:
Function Decode(dString As String)
Dim dLen As Long, dTemp As String
    For dLen = 1 To Len(dString)
        dTemp = dTemp & "& # " & Asc(Mid(dString, dLen, 1)) & ";"
    Next
Decode = dTemp
End Function

Would create the strings you asked for, but wouldn't eliminate any invalid character problems.

Anyway, if you just want the code that excel return for a character, then this is a formula solution.

In B1:

=IF(COLUMNS($B1:B1)>LEN($A1),"",CODE(MID($A1,COLUMNS($B1:B1),1)))
Copy down and across

Hi,

Thank you all for replying so fast!!

You are right..
I thought of using Unicode..
I actually was doing so, by using an excel add in that saves my excel sheet as .csv files in Unicode.

my problem was in the development environment that i'm using (IBM business process manager)

When i uploaded my .properties file into this platform
I was getting weird characters around several words.

for example: the word 'País' is displayed (in html browser, ie8) as 'PaÃ*s'
and 'Teléfono' as 'Teléfono'.

That's why i though of the other option...
(That I tested and was displayed those words correctly)

I know this is out of this forum scope,
but do you have in mind why this is happening?

Thank's!

I did not look into this too deep, but the à is well known in these cases. The letters with diacritics in UTF-8 are stored as

<195> < some other code><SOME code other>

Since 195 is usually the code for the à character, each letter with diacritics is read in ascii as ÃX where X is another character.

For ex. the "é" in utf-8 is encoded with 195 169. These are the ascii characters à and ©.

Since the utf-8 is very used in the web, this is a possible cause for your problem.

If you want to fully understand what's happening with your files maybe you can explore this?

OK
Thank's for replying..
I think i found my problem.
.properties files can be saved as unicode by definition and
Thant's why my files weren't being uploaded correctly.

So I had to change the strategy and my option now is to paste the Unicode representation text into .properties files.

Since, I have more than 500 texts to be converted multiple in 8 different languages, I need script which will do the work.

for example:
the word "Hello"
in Unicode is:

U+0048 U+0065 U+006C U+006C U+006F

and in my properties file, it should be displayed as:

/u0048/u0065/u006C/u006C/u006F

Does any one know how to generate it, using excel tools/functions?

Thank's!
