Okay I am having a difficult time wrapping my head around a logical way to do this. I have a set of data in the form below.

1 A
2
3
4 B
5
6
7
8 C
9

I need to sum the values in column A from the row contain text in column B to the next row containing text in column B (including the row with the top text, bot not the second) or to the end of column A, and place that number next to the text in column C. So from the data above I want to get

1 A 6
2
3
4 B 22
5
6
7
8 C 17
9

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
Would be easier if you first filled down A, B, and C so that those values were in each row in column B.

But, barring that, here's one way:

C1=IF(B1<>"",SUM(A1:INDEX(A1:$A$9,IF(ISNA(MATCH("*",B2:$B$9,0)),ROW($A$9)-ROW(A1)+1,MATCH("*",B2:$B$9,0)))),"") copied down

Thanks OakTree. I will have to think about what you came up with to see if I can incoporate that logic into my macro. How would you do it in VBA? The data I actually have incoporates more rows and columns than what I showed in the sample. What I actually have is a load data taken 48 times a day for multiple years. I have a work sheet showing in columns a through d respecively the date, time, load, and wether a particular peice of equipment is on or off. It should be noted that some months there may be no on condition, only off. An example is below.

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 192pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=256 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" span=3 width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64 height=17>Date</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64>Time</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64>Load</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=64>On/Off</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right height=17 x:num="40240">3/3/2010</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>930</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1614</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">ON</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right height=17 x:num="40240">3/3/2010</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1000</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1554</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">ON</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right height=17 x:num="40240">3/3/2010</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1030</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1566</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">OFF</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right height=17 x:num="40240">3/3/2010</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1100</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" align=right x:num>1582</TD><TD style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent">OFF</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I need find the row with the peak load every month for both the on and off condition and delete all the other rows. I have developed the code to do that but I also want to know the total load in the month for both the on and off conditions. Here is my current code.

Code:
Sub SortDelete()
'establish the number of rows
 LastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row

'create a month/year column to sort by later
 For x = 2 To LastRow Step 1
    Cells(x, 5) = Month(Cells(x, 1)) & Year(Cells(x, 1))
 Next x

'sort by on/off, then month/year, then load
 Worksheets("Sheet3").Range("A:E").sort _
    Key1:=Range("D2"), Key2:=Range("E2"), Key3:=Range("C2"), _
    Order1:=xlAscending, Order2:=xlAscending, Order3:=xlDescending, _
    Header:=xlYes, OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
    DataOption1:=xlSortNormal, DataOption2:=xlSortNormal, DataOption3:= _
    xlSortNormal

'place "p" in columns where peak occured for that month/year for on/off condition
 For i = 2 To LastRow Step 1
    If Cells(i, 5) <> Cells(i - 1, 5) Then
    Cells(i, 6) = "P"
    End If
 Next i

'sort by the "p" column to put the rows with peaks on top
'then sort by month/year, then by on/off
 Worksheets("Sheet3").Range("A:F").sort _
    Key1:=Range("F2"), Key2:=Range("E2"), Key3:=Range("D2"), _
    Order1:=xlDescending, Order2:=xlAscending, Order3:=xlDescending, _
    Header:=xlYes, OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
    DataOption1:=xlSortNormal, DataOption2:=xlSortNormal, DataOption3:= _
    xlSortNormal

'establish number of rows with peaks
  LastRowPeaks = Cells(Rows.Count, "F").End(xlUp).Row

'delete nonpeak rows
  Range(Cells(LastRowPeaks + 1, "A"), Cells(LastRow, "A")).Select
  Selection.EntireRow.Delete

'delete "p" column
  Range("F1").EntireColumn.Delete

End Sub

Before I sort the second time my sheet looks something like this:

The ------ line just indicates that I skipped a few hundered rows. At this point I want to sum all of the loads in january and put that number beside P.

OakTree, if in my first example Column B had the apropriate text filled all the way down what would be the best way to sum all the values in Column A with the approriate text in Column B?

Would a simple "=SUMIF(B:B,B1,A:A)" be the best way to go about it? And then just put that in the macro as a FormulaR1C1? Or is there a better way to go about it?

Yep, SUMIF is the way to go. You'll want .Formula instead of .FormulaR1C1 if you're going to use the B:B ranges (instead of the R1C1 numerical equivalents).
