How to tell if a cell contains new data or that a cell previously empty now has a value.

Hi,

I would appreciate your help on what this function is called or how to do it.

The rows contain a list of drugs and each column is a different person. If a person is on the drug, i write the dose in the cell

I have two populations (spreadsheets), a before and after

I want to know how many times each drug has been started and how many times it has been stopped
If i calculate the number of people on each drug in the before cohort and then compare it to the number of people on that drug in the after cohort, this will not be helpful as it could have been started in 5 people and stopped in 5 people and it cancels it out.

but what i want to know is that is was started 5 times (in those who were not in it previously) but also stopped 5 times (in those that were on it in the before cohort).

if you want to count occurances of specific stuff in a cell then use =countif or countifs finctions

otherwise please provide minisheet or link to a file.
data should be in the same layout but maybe a dummy data.
