Hi -

I am an English teacher. I am trying to construct an EXCEL spreadsheet to keep track of student data such as: PRESENT; ABSENT AND LATE. I have succesfully in put the following two formula for Present and Absent but have been unable to come up with a correct forumula to track Late arrivals at class. I am using an "O" for students who are present when I call roll and "X" when students are absent when I call roll. I want to use "L" for students who arrive late for class but have failed in several attempta. I have successfully used the following:

For students absent I mark "X". The forumla is =COUNTIF(E4:R4\$S\$2).
For students who are late I want to mark"L" but I can't seems to get the forumula right.
For the Students who are present I mark "O"
Can anyone help me??
Thanks

### Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Are you using COUNTIF() for O and X? If so, I'm not sure why L wouldn't work. Am I missing something?

Bubbis

What are your formulas for each letter "O" "X" "L"?

Michael

Well, if you have Os, Xs, and Ls in a range from, let's say, A2:F2, then you'd use =COUNTIF(A2:F2,"=L").

Thank you! Thank you! Bubbis.......that fixed my problem. I really appreciate you help. I am just learning to use Excel and I am 65 years old.
