Icon question

Hi, although this is not strictly an excel question, it's related to it, cause it affects my capability to assign different icons to the shortcuts of my x-cel projects.
Perhaps somebody might be so kind as to answer it.

Shortly ago, I made the mistake of right-clicking on an icon for the option "open with" "Microsoft Photo Editor". Since then I'm unable to see the icon images contained in my folder, in the "thumbnails" mode.

How can I restore the options back to normal, so I can see what the icons are?

Thanks to all

Excel Facts

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
Just going with the obvious, but have you tried right-clicking the icons and choosing the correct program to open with from the list?

That generally sets things back to "normal."

Thanks for your interest.
Well....that's part of the problem. I don't know what is the right program. When I downloaded the icons from the web and saved them in a folder, I was able to see the thumbnails right away !!!

So...you're talking about *actual* icons? As in .ico files? I thought you were meaning the icons for files or something.

What kind of file extension are we talking about?

Vaan Pookie, thanks for your interest.
Yes, we are talking about .ico files.
The ones you use to give a different appeareance to the shortcuts.

As I explained in my previous post, I can't see the images. When I set the containing folder to "view-Thumbnails" I only get squares with the Microsoft Photoeditor logo, and the name of the icon file (This after I screwed-up one day and told the stupid machine to open those kinds of file extension using the Microsoft Photoeditor ).

You can understand how this can be quite unnerving!!

3 things.

1) I'm moving this out of the Excel questions and to the Technical forum :)

2) Why did you open the file with the image editor?

3) When you closed the file in the image editor, did you happen to save it? It could have saved it as something else.

Just a shot in the dark, though.
