If col 1 = a, b or c make col 2 = x

If col 1 = a, b or c make col 2 = x
but with mutiple occurances.
also if Col 1 = d, e or f make col 2 = y
if col 1 = g, h or j make col 2 = z etc.

Please answer these questions...

1. Explain what you mean by "with multiple occurences".

2. You said you want 'y' if Column 1 equals g, h or j... did you mean to deliberately skip the letter 'i'?

3. What comes after "z"; that is, what do you want if Column 1 equals g, h or j (or i depending on how you answer #2)?

Thanks for your reply. Thought letters and number would be easier - sorry for confusion.

Spreadsheet has data for wagon maintenance.
Col B
- Inspect wheels
- Repairs
- Shunting
- Lifting
- Lifting Wagons

So I want these items (events) to equal a number in Col H.
- Inspect wheels = 10
- Repairs = 20
- Shunting = 30
- Lifting = 40
- Lifting Wagons = 40

Sometimes multiply events = the same number.
