I want to enter an IF formula where the logical test is : CellA1 contains 17, where the cell contents may be 12abcd or 17abcd etc. Is this possible or should I use another formula?

Welcome to the board,

You can use COUNTIF()

as follows:

Book1
	A	B	C	D
1	TestData	Result
2	17abcd	YES
3	17bcde	YES
4	1abcd7	NO
5	8u	NO
6	ab17cd	YES
Sheet1

If you only need to test if 7 is at the begining of the test data then just use "17*".
