If function question

Rather than true or false I was hoping to get the value of certain cells copied into, say b2, based on what the value of A1 is. I understand that the If function doesn't allow this but is it possible some other way?

e.g if cell a1 contains 'A' cell b2=a1 if it (a1) contains 'B' b2=b1, If 'AB' b2 = cell a1+b1 etc.

same question for the countif funtion. if cells a1 to a13 contain 'X' b3 = 1, if cells b1 to b13 contain 'X' b3 = 2, if a1 to a13 contain x and b1 to b13 also contain 'X' b3 = 3.

Sorry if this makes no sense but that was my best shot at it.. seems like the more I learn about excel the more difficult it gets (not that have learned a lot yet but I'll keep trying).
Would greatly appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

Place formula in cell B3:

=IF(COUNTIF($A$1:$A$13,"X")=13,1,IF(COUNTIF($B$1:$B$13,"X")=13,2,IF(COUNTIF($A$1:$A$13,"X")+COUNTIF($B$1:$B$13,"X")=26,3)))

thanks a lot that is exactly what I was looking for (probably should have looked a little harder I noticed a very similar thread after starting this one.. )

umm another question for you... is it possible to limit the filter to smaller sections of rows/columns? if not is there any way around this? I want to keep information in columns d e f as it is but filter out the blanks in the first 3.
