Ihave a series of data in column B, which contain numbers and letters, example below

850 driedapples total2003456748 fuji
600 driedapples 2005892682 fuji
I want to simply copy all cells over to column A that does not have the word "total" in it

Any ideas?

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.

Try this: In B1 (copied down):
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("total",B1)),"",B1)

Another alternative, if you don't want formulas in column A is this:
1. Copy column B to column A
2. Select column A
3. Edit|Replace...|Find what: *total*|Replace with: leave blank|Replace All
