if statement dependent on text

Hi

I have the following IF/Then statement

=If(a1="ab",1,2)

I want "1" returned if any part of the text in a1 starts with ab, even it it's more than one word

I tried ab*, but I don't know what else to try

=If(left(a1,2)="ab",1,2)

You just made the conditional format easier

Now I don't have to type each condition !

For a CF you should just need

=LEFT(A1,2)="ab"
