IF THEN statement with text?

Hello,
I have looked through many threads looking for an answer but could not find it.

Iam looking for a formula that will enter text into a cell based on the text of another.

Example:

In this example, I need the cell in column B to match the text in column A.

I think this formula may help you.

=LEFT(A1,MIN(FIND({"-","0","1","2","3","4","5","6","7","8","9"},A1&"0123456789"))-1)

Use this formula in B1 & copy down.

This might work too.
If you just want to extract any number of letters or numbers left of the hyphen.

Code: 
=LEFT(A1,(FIND("-",A1,1)-1))
