Illegible caption on command button

In Excel 2003, under XP, I am placing command buttons from the controls toolbox on spreadsheets. The captions are not shown in the default or selected fonts except when the button is clicked at run-time. Then the font returns to its hard-to-read state.

I seem to recall finding a solution to this before...

The command buttons from the Forms toolbar (the older set) work fine, but the ActiveX ones don't.

Can anyone help?

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.

If the Forms command buttons work fine is there a reason you can't use them?

I can, and am, using the version from Forms. But I will need to detect events other than clicks, and therefore I'd prefer to use the more versatile button. It's also easier to organize code in the sheets corresponding to the controls rather than in modules.

I also just wonder what is going on...

Is the formatting of the caption controlled by setting the Properties at Design time or are the properties being changed at run-time?

The appearance of the font changes at run time when the button is clicked. It becomes legible then until the mouse pointer is moved off the button. In design mode it is always illegible. The illegibility seems to be a change in the font to a primitive one with poor spacing of characters.
