Image thumbnails linked to photos

I want to keep photos (as records of work completed) in part of an excel spreadsheet. They are large files and hi resolution, so it would be better to show only thumbnails in the spreadsheet, and have them linked to the actual files. That way clicking on the thumbnail would launch an associated viewer if we want to see details. Or if the link just opened the folder where all the images for a given job are stored... Is this possible?

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
