import from text file to a table with an autonumber

I can't seem to import from a text file into a table that has an autonumber. I figured it would be smart enough to add an autonumber for each record as it imported, but I guess not.

Should i change my autonumber fields on my lookup tables to number fields and add a number to each record in my text files, or is there a relatively easy way to import to tables with autonumbers fields?

oh, btw, I am using Access 2000

nevermind, importing into a temporary table then copying into the lookup table worked fine.
