Importing data from another worksheet

Hi All.

I know this has been discussed already, but I think I am after something a little different to what I've seen guidance for.

If possible this needs to be done without macros.

This is for a job sheet log. I have just made a job sheet in excel.

I would like to be able to import all the details on the jobsheet into our separate log.

We have a standard naming format for the jobsheets. e.g. myjobsheet-0001-15_06_11.xml

What I would like to happen is either I press import, it asks me for the job number and imports all the data, or I enter the job number in a cell and then press import.

The log should not be updated. If anything happens to the original jobsheet, the log should stay the same unless the import button is pressed again.

I spent most of the day yesterday trying to get the INDIRECT command working to put the job number into the rest of the file name to import it, and just couldn't get it working!

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you hate GETPIVOTDATA?
Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
For importing data, I think a macro would be best. Some VBA to create a connection to the log file & import the data. Probably using ADO would be best. Suggest you google for examples of ADO recordsets.

If you must do the import without a macro, then manually via data import wizard. Of course, this won't give the ability to have users just enter the job number via form or cell.

Ok, I'll do that tomorrow when I'm back in the lab.

Thanks for your help.

The only reason I would have rather done this without using macros is because we have tight security on our computers at work, and it always throws up a "do you want to allow macros?" Question every time you open the document.

It would be a pain without macros. Probably easiest (without macros) to simply open the log file, copy the cells & paste where you want. Then close the log file.

With VBA, simplest to code something like above, maybe.
