Importing text in powerpivot

I have a column called "Invoice Label." The rows consist of mixed alpha-numeric characters that powerpivot correctly imports as text. I also have another column called "Invoice ID." The records in this column consist of a mix of either all numbers or alpha-numeric characters. Powerpivot reads the second column as all number and does not import the records that are a mix of alpha-numeric characters. Can I format this column such that it imports properly? I don't need to perform calculations on the field but I do need for it to be included in my resulting pivot table results.

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
I had the same problem yesterday when importing a CSV file with mixed alpha and numeric. The Alphas were in the first rows, but the texts were brought in as blank. The workaround I used was the open the CSV file in Excel. Then used the Data, Text to Columns to convert the column to Text. Then I used the xlsx file as the data source instead of the csv file. Not ideal because my data will eventually have more the the 1 million-row limit.
