increment

how would I increment a formula by multiple rows without just retyping it 52 times? E.g.:

=max(a1:a10)

=max(a20:a30)

etc...

i know it can be done by setting up in another column:

A1
A10
A20
etc...

then using 'indirect' : MAX(INDIRECT(G1):INDIRECT(G2))
and dragging down.

just curious if it can be done without using the reference column

=MAX(OFFSET($A$1, ROW()*10-10, , 10))
