incremental addition or subtraction

I have a few cells with relevant values and here is a small explanation of what I want to do.

I have master cells j2 and k2.

I also have values in cells h15 and h16 then j15 and j16 but these are rough values sometimes very far apart i.e h15 far apart from h16 and j15 far apart from j16.

i also have the increment that i would add or subtract in m2.

If i type add in l2, add increment in m2 to value in k2 until i get a closely calibrated figure as close to the figure in h16 as possible, then the same for h15 in another cell.

if i type subtract in l2 then minus increment in m2 from value in j2 until i get a closely calibrated figure as close to the figure in j15 and then the same for j16 in another cell.

i have like 200 cells i need to apply this formula to so an IFstatement is better than a macro.

help me solve this and beers on the mansion..

Hi: Water

Have you looked at the "goal seek" under the tools menu bar?

A short example might help explain

okay a short example

okay just put in 1020 1256 in the master cells

3 in the increment cell m2

in h15 and h16 you have 71 and 89

now type subtract in l2 to subtract 3 from 1020 until you get a close enough value to 71 and the same thing in the cell with 89.

hope this demonstrates at least 1 side of the story..

i have never attempted to use goal seek, i only know 1 type of goal seeking

Do you wish only the final value that is "close" to 71, or all the intermediate values when repeatedly subtracting 3? How do you define close? Closest in terms of the absolute value of the difference, or closest that is equal to or greater than 71. I see no reason for the word subtract to be in I2 in order to meet your requirements.
