Initiate sending Excel file from Excel verses Outlook - can't open attachement on iphone

In the past we have initiated e-mails in Outlook (attaching the Excel file) and have successfully opened the attachment on an iphone.

We have recently started initiating e-mails in Excel (send file as an attachment) and we now receive an error when attempting to open the file on the iphone.

Anyone experience this? TNEF vs RTF?
