I have this line of code that checks to see is the string variable xfee_type contains the text "light". It results in a "Type mismatch" when the value of xfee_type = "*Insurance Hrly ElmM 001-50". I suspect the error may be caused by the leading asterisk. (but that's an uneducated guess)

Code:
If InStr(xfee_type, "light", vbTextCompare) > 0 Then

The string is extracted from an external data source that I cannot edit. Is anyone able to suggest any workaround?

Your code is wrong. It should be:

VBA Code:
If InStr(1, xfee_type, "light", vbTextCompare) > 0 Then
