Intermittant Issues Opening Spreadsheets

This is perhaps a PC issue rather than an Excel issue I'm not sure. Basically a colleague has an issue occasionally when trying to open spreadsheets. A quite small and basic sheet (think perhaps few hundred rows and 5-10 columns, nothing large what so ever) when double clicked to open the task bar in Excel will simply get stuck on 'downloading' and the spinning wheel (egg timer) in Windows 7 just spins.

My colleague has left it for quite some time before killing it (5-10 mins) and often the sheet will open just fine after closing Excel.

This has been happening more and more often - it's Excel 2007 and a fairly new (6 months old) Dell PC running Windows 7 Professional.

Any suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated :)
