Hi, can someone tell me if there is a formula I can use to identify cells with a common feature.
For example if I have the following cell entries:

a
ab
abc
bc
bb

Is there a formula along the lines of <if A1 contains "a" then "x" otherwise "y"> and the first 3 cells will come up with "x". Thanks

Tom

Excel Facts

Test for Multiple Conditions in IF?
Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.
I think you need to be more specific as to what you mean by a common feature. Anything programmed needs to follow tangible rules, so those rules will need to be clearly defined.

Hi,

if the definition is "contains" you might try SEARCH
  A    B
1 data contains
2 a
3 ab   x
4 abc  x
5 bc
6 bb

Code:
RANGE FORMULA (1st cell)
B2:B6 =IF(ISERROR(SEARCH(A1,A2)),"","x")
