I have a list of zip codes within a specific area - in this file contains zip codes and jurisdictional codes.

I have a list of tax rates withing a specific area - in this file contains tax rates and juridictional codes.

Is there a way so I can take both files and combine them - so I will only have tax rates based on zip code?

How can you automate Excel?
Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
Sure. Take a look at the VLookup() function in Excel help. Post back if you get stuck.

Are you looking to have one file return data from the other, keeping them as seperate workbooks, (if so, then go where Greg's pointing you.), or are you wanting to actually combine the data from both workbooks into one?

Here's a little more info.

I want to compile a list of tax rates based on zip code for the entire state of IA. I have a file that has all of the zip codes and also has jurisdictional codes, town names, etc. I also have a file that lists all the town names and their tax rates and code.

I want one file that has a zip code then a tax rate next to it.

And its not a matter of copy and paste.

I have no idea what "judicial codes" look like, but this would be a simple example.
book1
ABCDEF
1ZipJudicialTax(VLookup)JudicalTax
260000abc5.50%abc5.50%
360001abc5.50%bcd4.50%
460002bcd4.50%def4.75%
560003def4.75%efg5.00%
660004efg5.00%
