I have found that when I am using Countif vs the sort filter in Excel; the countif statement if giving me results that are not counting all the values in a column

For example

=COUNTIF(R2:R480,"Y")

is returning a value of 80 when I use a Sort Filter of "Y" i get a result of 271

Do I need to TRIM or CLEAN the values in my column to get a more accurate result from Countif?

Is there a better formula to determine how many "Y" are in a column?

Thanks

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
What is the other formula you are using?

If you mean using the autofilter it shows 271 rows after filtering, then you will need to find out why you are getting different results.
It's better to clean the actual data, rather than trying to do it with a formula.
