Hi all,
I have a reasonably large workbook that I work on at the end of every quarter.
Each time I make changes to it, I have to make a formula change. However, when I drag the formula down to copy down the rest of the column, it takes about 15 minutes to complete. During that time, I can't do anything else in Excel.

The spread sheet has a page of data, a Pivot Table on another page and then the page that I'm making changes to has a few VLookup columns.
The page I'm working on has approx 2500 rows. The whole workbook is 3.1mb.

Is there any way that I can speed up this process? Is the file size too large, and if so, what is the best way to reduce it?

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Mel

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
2500 rows is not very large (I know it's all relative) but 3.1 MB is. What is the formula that you are using?

<style type="text/css">p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Lucida Grande'}span.s1 {color: #0057d6}span.s2 {color: #006107}</style>Yes, I thought it was more to do with the file size that the number or rows.
The formula I'm trying to copy down is pretty basic:

=SUM(C4:F4)-SUM(C3:F3)

I think it's the combination of the pivot table and several columns with VLookups in them that add to the size, would that be correct?

Do you have any SUMPRODUCT or other array formulas with whole column references?

No, I don't think so.
I have a worksheet containing the raw data (which comes to 22,800 rows), then a Pivot Table of this data, then a third worksheet where I copy and paste the Pivot Table data (2500 rows) so that I can have more flexibility with sorting and calculation cells since PT has limitations on what you can move around and manipulate. This third sheet is the only one with formulas, which is one column of VLookup, referencing the raw data sheet and then just two columns of SUM functions as advised above.
Is it perhaps the VLookup looking at the large raw data sheet that is holding things up?
