Limit how much info. in cell

I am creating a template and two of the cells need to be limited as to how much info. to contain, ie: say cell A1 will be limited to 26 characters or numbers etc.. how can I do this. After i put the sheet together with all the info. it will be downloaded to another program which has space limits per line.

forst select the cell you want to limit the size then

from the menu go to
Data -> Validation

on the popup window under ALLOW select Text Length

and type the desired minimum and maximum character length in the boxes

Thanks, that works, but have another question? is there a way to limit the input so when the max is reached it stops you but still accepts what you put in without having to type all over again or having to go up to the formula bar and back space to the limit
