I have a bar chart pivot table in excel where the actual names of each bar are a bit hard to understand (but still necessary to display). I only display around 10-15 bars on the plot so I have a decent amount of real estate to play with.
To make the data more easily understandable, when I present my graph in a report I add a text box next to each bar with an easier to understand description of the bar. An example of this might be the y-axis lists a nonsensical model # and then in my text box I would say "blue socks" or "red socks" - something people can understand easier.
However, since the bars might change position week to week (move from #8 in position to #5, for example) I have to always rearrange my labels. What I would like to do is add another column in my data table called "label name" and that's where I enter "blue socks" and "red socks" alongside the model number and then I link my pivot table labels/annotations directly to this column in my data table using some kind of pivot table lookup.
The reason I can't just append the plain-text description to the model number and display both in the y-axis is because sometimes the plain-text description is too long.
Anybody have ideas or recommendations on how to make this happen?
