Link Problem

I have been trying to set up links to large standardized datasets, and had been using lookups, but the links were huge, so I went to sumif statements with named ranges, but my sumif statements don't work unless the files they are drawing from are open. Does anyone know a workaround for this (ie. a small dynamic link that does not lose the information when the dependent file is closed). Thanks
