Linked hidden rows showing in a chart

Hi all,

I have seen a number of threads discussing situations where rows have been hidden and are not showing in charts when the poster wants them to show in the chart. I am having the opposite problem.

We have recently switched from using 2003 to 2010 and are having a few teething problems. Previously we had a spreadsheet which we updated monthly. Each row in the data related to a month and so each month one more row would be completed. For time saving purposes we set up rows for every month up to the end of 2015 with the correct formulas. In Excel 2003 we used to hide the incomplete rows so that a chart (in another linked workbook) that plotted the data only plotted up to the current date and then unhide a row each month as the data became available.

Now we have moved to Excel 2010 this still superficially works. When I have both the Data file open and the file that has the Diagram open it shortens the axis with the months on as desired. I have then saved both files and checked that they are in manual calculation mode (as most of our files are due to the size) but then when I close the Data file, the Diagram in the diagram file snaps back to showing all the years on the axis and a blank space where the incomplete data are being plotted. I have tried alternative ways and orders of closing and saving and nothing seems to work. It appears as if some how Excel is no longer able to remember that the rows are hidden unless the file is open. This not only causes problems in Excel but then for the subsequent linking to the diagram in Word and eventually the PDF conversion of the word file.

Many thanks in advance,
Jenny
