Linking Pivot tables to external excel file

I have a dashboard with pre defined pivot tables and a few formula tables that populate basic graphs and information.

This is done by a daily raw data dump into one of the sheets. The workbook is getting large in file size and I wanted to link the pivot tables to the raw data file that is updated every day automatically. The question is, when a user opens the dashboard report and the pivot tables refresh (by a macro) will report update if the raw data file is not opened at the same time? Can it read new data from a closed file?

It would be similar to MS access using split tables.

Thanks,

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
From closed file is fine. If it helps, I think there is an option to have a pivot table (based on external data) refresh on file open. So without VBA. To combat large file size also consider setting the pivot table to not save the underlying data, it is another pivot table option.
