Linking Spreadsheets

Hey, new guy here needing some help.

I'm running two spreadsheets, and I want to set it up so that when I input data into one, the other one gets updated with the same data.

Now, I have been able to do this, but is there a way to make this work when I change the name of the spreadsheets?

We rename the spreadsheets each day with the same basic title followed by the current date. So, the link reference in Spreadsheet B will always come from Spreadsheet A (first date created). I need these references to constantly update so that when I change the file name of Spreadsheet A to the current date, Spreadsheet B will now reference cells from that one.

Can this be done?

Thanks

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
Do you need to hold the information from the previous day or does the table only need to look at the "named" sheet?

Both are possible but require a different answer.

thanks for the reply.

i would say the table just has to look at the named sheet, but i'm not sure exactly what you mean :S

i'll try to clarify my problem with an example:

Sheet A - Jan 1 09 Sheet B - Jan 1 09

Sheet B -Jan 1 09 will be updated with changes I make to Sheet A - Jan 1 09

Few days later I'll add some updates to Sheet A - Jan 1 09 and rename it Sheet A - Jan 4 09 ... Also may have done some changes to Sheet B - Jan 1 09 earlier that day and saved it as Sheet B - Jan 4 09.

So, Sheet B - Jan 4 09 is still referencing Sheet A - Jan 1 09, but I need it to update to reference Sheet A - Jan 4 09 or else no updates will happen.

If you have both files open and then make your changes to your source file and save it with a different name, your "linked" file should change to the new file name with in the link.

I'm not sure this is what you want, but your explanation is a bit hazy.

If this isn't a solution, please explain which sheets are in which files (you can name then file a and file b)

it doesnt up update automatically, but i'm able to update source manually each time i open the file, which is ok for now.

With the linked workbook open check Tools => Options => Calculation tab and see if you have "Update Remote References" checked and automatic is checked and not manual for calculation.
