List use in functions

I am trying to use conditionals within the defined list that I've made using the directions here (Insert > Name > Define). My problem is that 1) I have no idea where these list end up or 2) how to use them when making a function with conditionals. My list overlap in terms of names and records so if anyone could give me some pointers on how this works.

Thanks in advance for the help here.

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
What are "conditionals" - IF functions? Conditional formats?

After you do the Define steps you listed, you generally either select the Refers To range, enter its address, or use some formula that returns a range (INDEX, OFFSET, etc). So you should know where it "ends up".

To use it in a function, simply type in the name you define where you would normally use your list range.
