Listing and counting names in a column

I have to list and count the name in a column. There are over 2000 names that could appear and creating a countif formula for each would take too long. Is there a formula that will list all the name and the amount of time each appears?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

The issue is I would have to know all the names in the list to use a pivot table. Some of the names may be numbered companies that will only or have only been used once.

Are you able to do pivot table for multiple sheets? I have a workbook that has 40 sheets in it and would like that same result.
