Lock Down Individual Cells

In Excel 2003, is there a way to lock down only portions of a spreadsheet? I'd like to have text that cannot be modified, yet have other cells for data entry.

Not familiar with xl2003 but in xl2000 cells seem to be 'Locked' by default. The sheet must then be Protected (Tools-->Protection) for this to take effect. To have unprotected cells just select them and Format them to not be Locked before Protecting the sheet.
