I want to protect individual cells in a sheet. I am working on a shift report for my place of business and want to lock certain cells so that the staff are not able to make changes to some cells but are required to enter data in other cells. Therefore I do not want to protect the whole sheet. I am using Microsoft Excel for Mac 2008. Please help me because I am really struggling.

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
In the pc version cells are locked by default when you protect a worksheet. You can unlock cells on the protection tab of the format cells dialogue and you should then be able to use these when the sheet is protected. I guess it's the same on in the Mac version.

Don't confuse 'locking' with 'protecting'. You can protect an entire sheet but have all the cells unlocked, and you can lock all the cells but have the sheet unprotected. If you want to stop someone messing around with a cell, you have to do both.

At least that's the way it works in the PC version.
