Hello All,
I'm wondering if anyone can give me the easist way to do this. I have data that is sorted alphabetically or numerically on a tab. On another tab I want to pull the information in column C, D, and E based on what is in cell A. So if I want to only pull information for "1Y", then I should have a list of two entries based on the information below. My goal is to have a tab for each entry in column A (one tab for "1Y", one tab for "1U" etc.) I'm using excel 2003. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

A B C D E
1Y 1Y B S9 AD 1181450
1U 1U A D1 AFSBD 1093316
1U 1U A D1 AFSBW 1093316
1Y 1Y B T1 AQ 00PER0052500

Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Ok, so I think I confused people by trying to paste what was in my cells. I can't paste part of my workbook because my work PC won't let me download what I need to do it. So, I will try again to explain. I have a tab I will call "1Y" that I want to be a list of results from another tab I will call "sort" tab in my workbook. I want my "1Y" tab to lookup the values in column A of the "sort" tab, and based on what i specify, which in this case is "1Y" it will return whats in column C, D & E. The "sort" tab it's looking at is in a list format that has all information that is not in any order except alphabetically by column D or numerically by column E. There a drop down choice in column A that only has 5 choices. (1V, 1X, 1Y, 1U & 1W)
So the tab i'm seeking a formula for will only look for data for 1Y and return the values in columns C, D & E to the right of it. Hope I clarified better.

Thanks

We are on Sheet 1Y...

A1 houses a dropdown list.

1Y is selected from A1.

A2:

=COUNTIF(Sort!B2:B200,A1)

This formula assumes B2:B200 as the match range. Adjust to suit.

A3 houses the string Idx, B3:D3 headers which corresponds to the headers
in C1:E1 on Sort.

A4, control+shift+enter, not just enter, and copy down:

=IF(ROWS($A$4:A4)<=$A$2,SMALL(IF(Sort!$B$2:$B$200=$A$1,ROW(Sort!$B$2:$B$200)-ROW(Sort!$B$2)+1),ROWS($A$4:A4)),"")

B4, just enter, copy across, and down:

=IF(N($A4),INDEX(Sort!$C$2:$E$200,$A4,MATCH(B$3,Sort!$C$1:$E$1,0)),"")

I don't want to be a pain but do you think you can explain these formulas somewhat? The dropdown list that is in cell 1A is actually on the "sort" tab, not on tab "1y." Basically all information is located on this sort tab. I just want to pull it in based on what is in the drop down list in columnn A on the sort tab. I don't understand the header formulas. I'm sorry! Can you elaborate a little? thanks so much

That would be too much for now...

I think I understand what you want...

A1: 1Y

If you want to, we can also have a formula in A1 that determines the current sheet name:

=REPLACE(CELL("filename",A1),1,FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1)),"")

A2:

=COUNTIF(Sort!A2:A5,A1)

A3: Idx, B3: Field-3, C3: Field-4, and D4: Field-5.

A4, control+shift+enter, not just enter, and copy down:

=IF(ROWS($A$4:A4)<=$A$2,SMALL(IF(Sort!$A$2:$A$5=$A$1,ROW(Sort!$A$2:$A$5)-ROW(Sort!$A$2)+1),ROWS($A$4:A4)),"")

B4, just enter, copy across, and down:

=IF(N($A4),INDEX(Sort!$C$2:$E$5,$A4,MATCH(B$3,Sort!$C$1:$E$1,0)),"")

Sorry for my delay in getting back.
The sort tab can not be changed from the way it is set up now because it needs to be modified as we get in new material or change material numbers and place those in new areas. (these areas are the 1Y, 1V, 1W, 1X or 1U choices). The “sort” tab is then sorted to get the information into alphabetical (by style code) or numerical (by material #) order. This is why the set up of the sheet can’t be different than what it is now because it needs to be modified constantly. So to put the “sort” tab into some kind of order as you enter new information the way you have explained would be counter productive for us. I wanted one tab for each section, so it would be 5 other tabs each called 1Y, 1V, etc. Each of these tabs would only pull the information for their respective locations so that when I printed the worksheet for each tab, I would have a list of what materials are in what locations. Again, all being pulled from the sort tab. Right now I have it set up to pull all information on each worksheet but only highlight the material for each different tab location. I wanted to clean up the sheets to only list what is in each location. (1Y, 1V, 1W, 1X or 1U.) Do you have any ideas on how to make this happen? I really do appreciate you taking the time with me on this. I know it is really difficult especially when you have nothing to look at. Thanks so much.

The set up I posted does not cahnge anything in the "Sort" tab.
It involves having a sheet for each location. In each such sheet,
the sheet name is automatically created. Based on a location (aka a sheet
name), the relevant records are retieved from Sort.

You have:

A2:

=COUNTIF(Sort!A2:A5,A1)

What is in A2:A5 because on my sort tab I have different locations listed. My A column is where we would fill out whether the item is in 1Y or 1V etc. So A2:A5 is actually just 5 different items in two different locations. A1=1Y, A2=1U, A3=1U, A4=1Y and A5=1Y. I entered all the formulas as you have them listed and I am getting just blank cells.
Also, in A3 you have Idx. Is this what i'm supposed to enter? The letters IDX?

Ok, so i messed up. I now realize that the A2:A5 is the range. Duh, sorry. So the rest of the cells i'm getting a #number! error.
