Lookup a value in a table based on the row and the column fields

I have a 2-dimensional table and I need to select the value based on the values of the row and the column. A sort of (X,Y) coordinate as input and as output the text that is contained in the X,Y cell.
Example below
abcd
1applepearmango...
2tomatosalad...
3

For the combination (a,2) I need to be able to extract tomato.

The rows and columns cannot be sorted to perform a vlookup.
 

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.

Thank you, it requires an additional mapping but then it works!
