I have been searching for day to find away to sum amounts from adj cells when looking up text from another cell...Not sure if that make sense and that maybe why I'm not able to find my answer. I know I may have to use a couple different formulas, but as long as I can get a final amount without manually calculating them would be great.

Project:
Worksheet 1: Check registry. Each transaction row has a category and amount column
Worksheet 2: Is my budget sheet: I want to look up the specific category "grocery" which will be in the column multiple times, and return the sum of all the amounts in the row next to the word grocery.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
From the description it sounds like you need sumif or sumifs (the latter is easier to change if you need to add more criteria later, even if you don't need them now).

If you're category is in column X and your sums are in column Y.... Put this in the cell where you want to see the amount.

VBA Code:
=SUMIF(X:X,"groceries",Y:Y)
