hi!
if your 'splash screen' is a user form then try calling your
macro in the on active event of your form. just dont forget to call
doevents once in a while in your macro to update your splash scree.
I think this will do the trick just like the progress bar!

I can get this going but only the outline of my userform (which has a label box on it) appears while the macro in the background is running. Any ideas ?

have you tried putting
Doevents
In several parts of your code?
This will update your userform.
example
sub macro1()
for i=1 to 100000
for j=1 to 10000
for k=1 to 100
z=k*rnd()
next k
doevents
next j
next i
With out the doevents your exel will look like hanging up.
but wiht that line, it will be updated.
