Maintaining zeros

Hey guys, I am trying to maintain zeros when combining cells and am having difficulty. I have a cell say 0001 that I am combining with several other cells and need to maintain the zeros. The cells that I am joining it with are both numeric and alpha. I used the custom format cells to get the 0001 to stay but when I combine the cells with =A1&A2 etc it just brings over the 1&blah, leaving off the zeros. I am assuming there is some way to do this but am stumped. Thanks in advance for any help.
