Make calculation using only the first character in a cell

Hi all

I have been puzzling over this one below

I want to use only the first character in a cell to make a calculation but have not worked out how to combine the 2 formulas

so

for example 'D+' is in my first cell
but I only want to use 'D' for my calculation (but I dont want to change the D+ in the cell

=LEFT(A1,1) that gives me the 'D"

I now want to incorporate it into the formula

=MATCH(A1,A74:A82,0)

but am not sure how to do this

any comments would be appreciated
