I am not sure if what I want to do is even possible so I thought I would ask some experts!

I have a pivot table and I need to see if it is possible to have a field in the Pivot Table that I manually type in and that does not refer back to the excel table full of data driving the Pivot Table.

thanks!

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
Your question could be interpreted two ways:

1) Can I filter the pivot table by keying in a value rather than using the drop down filter

2) Can I key data into the pivot table data area manually.

The short answer to both is NO

The longer answer to 1 is sort of. You could key a value into a cell or input box and validate that the value exists in a pivotfield or pivotitems collection and set all pivotitems.visible = false EXCEPT the value you have entered. you would have to manipulate the pivot table elements using VBA.

The longer answer to 2 is that you could copy and paste->special-> values only for the pivot table. You can then enter anything you like into the cells that were part of the pivot table. Alternatively you can enter data in cells beside the pivot table and use either cell references or pivot table intersects to reference values in the pivot table. In my experience the latter are pretty difficult to control and manage properly.
