I have data set of some three hundred values measuring a population over time and I want to calculate the frequency of oscillation in its plot—effectively measuring the frequency of boom and bust cycles. Any thoughts on the right function (or series of functions)?

Hi mlocsin,

Probably the best method mathematically to determine the frequency content of the values is to use the Fourier transform to convert the time series into the frequency domain. I recommend you check out the Fourier Analysis Tool in the Analysis ToolPak.
