Merging data from different work sheets

I am a beginner with Excel, so please excuse me if I use the wrong terminology or pose my question improperly.

I have two spread sheets. The first one is a master record of Technician stats, with their certifications and cert dates.

The second spread sheet is an update with the Technicians names and new updates on their cert dates.

What I would like to do is merge, or import the new cert dates on the idividual Techs from the second sheet to the first Master sheet and hopefully overwrite any date changes.

If you need more info this to help me, let me know. Thanks

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
Welcome!

Make sure you have the same feild names:

Open the two files you want to combine.

Select the one that will be "receiving" data.

Select data...consolidate

Use the reference box to select the range from the sheet you will be receiving data from, you can just select that file while the consolidate dialog box is still open and highlight that range you're interested in.

Hit Ok

Hope that does it!

Thanks for the welcome and the reply.

I still a couple of questions on how to do this.

What function should I use?

Will this method be able to match the dates up to the appropriate name?

Thanks again for the help.

Getting external data in this manner is going to append your recordset 1,(the file from which you initiate the "merge") with the data from recordset 2, which is the file to which you are refering.

Excel is just going to add the records from one feild in recordset1 to the feilds of the same name in recordset 2.

If this isn't what you're looking to do, let me know.

It sounds like maybe you need data to be "matched" to appropriate records, if this is the case, my method won't work.

With some more info perhaps I can provide a more specific method.

BTW, no formulas.
