Excel Facts

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
I don't quite follow your problem.
Is there a macro that has been run on startup to get to this state ?
What version of Excel are you using ?

If on Excel 07 or higher, try going to the Home button and then selecting Excel Options.
Choose "Advanced" and then scroll down to "Display Options for this worksheet"
Have a look at Gridline color and whether "Show gridlines" is checked.
