More data than Excel can handle

If I have more data than I can comfortably handle in Excel.

*A calculation I want to make seems like it would take 40 hours.
*After I press "calculate" in Excel, whenever I happen to press somewhere else in Excel with the mouse pointer, the calculation is aborted,

What should I do?
Is there any other application that is more suited for working with 5 million rows?
Will my experience be better in Access for example?

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
It all depends what you are needing to do. What sort of formulas are you using (and how many of those formulas do you have in your spreadsheet)?

Access is definitely more suited to house data and create relationships, especially with that amount. Howver there are times when Excel is required to perform the calculations.

5 million rows is serious stuff. Plenty of things can hold that amount but you may well need very careful design to process anything the slightest bit complicated.
